A lot of scary and fascinating items from the history of medicine await you on a visit of discovery through the Old General Hospital.
Medicine in Vienna achieved international standing in the middle of the 19th century. Students and physicians from all over Europe and even from America came to deepen their knowledge under the luminaries of the Viennese Medical School. The Old General Hospital in the 9th district of Vienna was the centre of great medical discoveries and scientific research. It encompassed among other things the medical-surgical “Josephinum” Academy and the Narrenturm or Fool’s Tower, which represented incredible progress in the “treatment” of mentally ill patients. Today it houses the Pathological-Anatomical Museum of Vienna. We will be glad to guide you through this successful albeit bloodcurdling chapter of Viennese history and through the Sigmund Freud Museum at No.19 Berggasse.
